6 September at 18.00. The 1st Klaipėda Biennial will continue at the Klaipėda Culture Factory (Hall C), Bangų g. 5A, with the dance performance “The Place of Presence” (2025) by artist Aske Thiberg.
Aske Thiberg’s 20-30 minute dance performance is based on minimalist, repetitive digital melodies interspersed with recordings from public online sound libraries. The work is inspired by Locking, a dance style that emerged in the 1970s alongside funk music.
In this performance, the indifferent facial expression and the repetition of movement and sound blur the boundary between man and machine. The sonic looping signals that initiate each gesture raise the question of whether the artist is responding to the music, or whether the music itself is controlling the body, turning it into an automated avatar.
Aske Thiberg (b. 1994) is a Copenhagen-based Swedish visual artist. Aske Thiberg is an artist with an MFA from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, graduating in 2023. He has performed and exhibited at institutions such as the Düsseldorf Art Union, Den Frie Centre for Contemporary Art in Copenhagen, O-Overgaden Institute for Contemporary Art, Kunsthal Charlottenborg and
Malmö Art Museum.
