The alleged story of Marlene Dytrich and Léni Riefenstahl is the meeting of two of the 20th century’s most prominent personalities, which is the equivalent of a collision of worlds. The two women were very different, both physically and spiritually, and their political views were completely incompatible. These differences are so obvious that reconciliation and dialogue between the two personalities seem impossible. Just as dialogue between the two dominant world systems is impossible. But is it really impossible?
Maria Magdalena Marlena Dytrich (born 1901 in Berlin, died 1992 in Paris) was a German-American actress and singer whose career spanned almost seven decades. Her acting career began with silent films (Little Napoleon, 1923). Her international fame came with the role of Lola in Josef von Sternberg’s film The Blue Angel (1930). As her career as an actress faded (her last film was Just A Gigollo, 1978), she performed in various countries as a revue and cabaret singer in the 1960s and 1980s. In 1960, Dytrich was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Helena Bertha Amalia Lehne Ryfenstahl (born 1902 in Berlin, died 2003 in Pöcking) was a German film director and photographer as well as an actress and dancer. She was one of the most famous cinematographers working in Nazi Germany. Her documentaries “Triumph of the Will” and “Olympia” made her an active propagandist for the Third Reich. After World War II, she was forced out of the film industry and became a photographer.
