SALOS – music and movement installation
This installation is a tribute to the history of our relationship with nature, to the present and to a future of concern. SALOS invites you to immerse yourself in an elemental state of being, created from minimalist music, movement, lights and abstract costumes.
When you enter the installation space, there is a feeling of gradual emptying – as if you were inside an hourglass. The audience’s ears are engulfed by the meditative music from the sand and the cello and the sounds of the live cello. This is a minimalist composition by the renowned composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė, composed of analogue sounds of sand and cello.
The viewers are greeted by human-like figures in the space, but their identities seem to have been erased, and their bodies are gradually swallowed up by the sand, with the feeling that disappearance into the sand is inevitable. Inspired by the Curonian Spit, SALOS is inspired by the themes of sustainability, environmental protection and the future of humanity.
The composer Žibuoklė Martinaitytė has been nominated for the Golden Stage Cross for her music for the dance and music installation Island in 2021.
PRESS COVERAGE OF THE INSTALLATION
“Žibuoklė Martinaitytė’s music encodes a subtle drama that emerges from the composer’s inner musical processes. This musical principle is perfectly suited to “Islands”, which deals with difficult themes – our relationship with nature, the environment and possible future scenarios determined by humanity’s irresponsibility. I would say that the drama of the music is the most pronounced in this piece, and it is combined with a rather minimal but clearly arranged choreography, which, like the visual part of the performance, is most interesting to look at from the top. “Islands is a subtly delicate picture of sound and movement, like a sketch.”
