In ancient times, Melnrage was a small fishing village and in the middle of the 20th century was connected to the city of Klaipeda. Now Melnrage is a favorite resort area of Klaipeda city, divided into two parts – the southern one is called Melnrage I and includes the North Pier, port accesses, and Klaipeda forest, the northern one – 2nd Melnrage – ending at Giruliai.
1st Melnrage beach with the North Pier is a favorite of vacationers – on sunny quiet days it is convenient to enjoy sunbathing here. On windy days, fans of power kites and Klaipeda residents who want to admire the impressive waves are happy to choose the area of the beach. And, of course, the North Pier is an ideal place to watch the passing ships, the sunsets, and take “Instagram” photos. The beach is long with clean and soft sand. There are changing cabins, a toilet, lifeguards on duty, and cafes. Even those who dream of surfing can try their hand at surfing school.
Melnrage village is dominated by its own houses, there are not many accommodation establishments – you can choose from several hotels, guest houses, cottages, or private rooms. There are also several grocery stores, cafés, and restaurants. From the center of Klaipeda to Melnrage can go both by bicycle or private car, as well as by public transport. The beach is easily accessible, making it popular with teenagers and young people.
While relaxing on the beach of 1st Melnrage, you can try a path for walks and bicycles connecting Klaipeda with Palanga. A sculpture “Walk with a Fish” can also be found on the North Pier. Remains of defensive fortifications dating back to the Second World War stand in one of the places of 1st Melnrage beach.
