The Embassy of Japan in Lithuania together with the Japan Foundation invites Klaip\u0117da residents and visitors to the 24th Japan Film Festival!<\/p>\n
On 28 February at 14:00, a screening of the festival will take place, featuring the film “The Cugaru Lacquer Madwoman”. <\/p>\n
The film will be screened in the original language with Lithuanian and English subtitles.<\/p>\n
Free screening.
\nFree tickets will be distributed at the Arlekino cinema box office before the screening. Seats are limited. <\/p>\n

Tugaru lacquerware, a traditional craft from Japan’s Aomori Prefecture, is also known as “baka-nuri” (“insanely meticulous lacquering”) because of the extremely long and complex production process. The lacquer is applied and polished dozens of times until a single piece is created. The geometric patterns and mirror-like sheen that emerge from the many layers create a timeless beauty. <\/p>\n
Miyako Aoki, who lives in Hirosaki City, Aomori Prefecture, is still finding her way after finishing high school and works in a supermarket to help support her family. When her father loses the motivation to continue the family’s dwindling trade, Miyako is forced to look back to the past and her long-hidden passion – hesitant but determined to take up the tradition of Tugaru lacquer and move forward. <\/p>\n
