{"id":44869,"date":"2026-03-16T16:41:48","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T14:41:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/klaipedatravel.lt\/event\/international-festival-of-intangible-cultural-heritage-lauksnos\/"},"modified":"2026-07-07T10:56:39","modified_gmt":"2026-07-07T07:56:39","slug":"international-festival-of-intangible-cultural-heritage-lauksnos","status":"publish","type":"mec-events","link":"https:\/\/klaipedatravel.lt\/en\/event\/international-festival-of-intangible-cultural-heritage-lauksnos\/","title":{"rendered":"International festival of intangible cultural heritage &#8220;Lauksnos&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"xdj266r x14z9mp xat24cr x1lziwak x1vvkbs\">\n<p><strong><b>The international intangible cultural heritage festival \u201cLauksnos\u201d returns to Klaip\u0117da\u2014five days of global traditions<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From July 8 to 12, Klaip\u0117da will host the fifth international festival of intangible cultural heritage, \u201cLauksnos,\u201d which will bring together tradition keepers from ten countries around the world.<\/p>\n<p>The festival&#8217;s name, &#8220;Lauksnos,&#8221; comes from a Prussian word meaning <em><i>stars<\/i><\/em> and <em><i>lights<\/i><\/em><\/p>\n<p>This year in Klaip\u0117da, visitors will have the opportunity to experience, learn about, and discover the traditional cultures of various countries around the world up close.  <strong><b>Festival guests will come from: Paraguay, Argentina, Japan, Spain, Italy, Greece, Georgia, Ukraine, Latvia, and Lithuania.<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>July 8 \u2013 the start of the festival <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The festival will kick off with a celebration of the Flag Day of Lithuania Minor at the Klaip\u0117da Castle Site, and in the evening, the Lauksnai Movie Night will take place in the courtyard of the Puppet Theater, inviting attendees to explore intangible cultural heritage through film.<\/p>\n<p>The evening\u2019s program will begin with the documentary film \u201c\u0160vent\u0117,\u201d dedicated to the centennial of the Lithuanian Song Festival in 2024. The documentary \u201c\u0160vent\u0117\u201d invites you to visit the place where magic is born\u2014behind the scenes of the Lithuanian Song Festival. The film features never-before-seen footage from the festival\u2019s biggest events, the excitement and challenges of preparation, human talent passed down through generations, and an all-encompassing sense of community.   <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Later, the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO will present the films *The Cross-Maker\u2019s Gene* and the animated film *The Secret of the Oak*, which tell the story of the Lithuanian tradition of cross-crafting, inscribed on UNESCO\u2019s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The films invite viewers to explore the symbolism of cross-crafting, the experiences of the artisans, and the significance of this unique tradition today. <\/p>\n<p>The film evening will conclude with the Japanese documentary *Ripples of Physis*, which tells the story of the tradition of karakami patterns and washi paper, which has been alive for more than 400 years. It is a visually stunning journey that reveals the connection between people, nature, and traditional patterns. The film\u2019s director, Sanae Kawai, will be in attendance.  <\/p>\n<p><strong><b> <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>July 9 \u2013 Exhibitions, sutartin\u0117s, and \u201cKankli\u0173 haiku\u201d <\/b><\/strong> <strong><b>with Japan<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On July 9, three international exhibitions will open at the Klaip\u0117da Ethnocultural Center: \u201cThe Glow of Straw,\u201d an exhibition dedicated to the traditions of straw gardens in Lithuania and Latvia; an exhibition on the tradition of handmade Washi paper from Japan; and a presentation of the Latvian glassblowing craft.<\/p>\n<p>In the evening, sutartin\u0117s will be performed in the courtyard of the Clock Museum, and the day will culminate with the concert \u201cThe Sound of the Lithuanian Kankl\u0117s.\u201d In the first part of the concert, Lithuanian kankl\u0117s players will present traditional Lithuanian kankl\u0117s music, while the second part will feature the program \u201cKankl\u0117s Haiku,\u201d performed by Yuko Yamasaki, the wife of the former Japanese ambassador to Lithuania, together with the \u017demyna kankl\u0117s ensemble and Kristijonas Lu\u010dinskas. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>July 10 \u2013 World Traditions in Theater Square <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>On Friday, a Traditional Crafts Village will be set up in Theater Square, where visitors will be able to learn about the art of decorating Ukrainian Easter eggs, Latvian straw gardens, Lithuanian-German delmonas, the tradition of amber hunting on the Lithuanian coast, palm weaving, and other crafts.<\/p>\n<p>Music will be playing in the Art Courtyard all afternoon<strong><b> <\/b><\/strong>Traditions of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Lithuania and Latvia\u2014including performances on chord and melody zithers and the Ievi\u0146\u0161-type diatonic accordion, the singing tradition of the villages in the Kaunas District, cimbalom music from the Ignalina and \u0160ven\u010dionys regions, the tradition of collecting amber on the Lithuanian coast, and the Lithuanian polka.<\/p>\n<p>Starting at 7 p.m. on the main stage in Theater Square, the festival will host concerts showcasing traditions of intangible cultural heritage protected by UNESCO. Audience members will have the opportunity to hear <strong><b>the musical traditions of the Ukrainian kobza and ratukin\u0117 lyra, as well as the traditions of Greek rebetiko and Spanish flamenco<\/b><\/strong> .  <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>July 11 \u2013 Italy, Georgia, Argentina, and Paraguay will meet in Klaip\u0117da <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Saturday <strong><b>The Traditional Crafts Village<\/b><\/strong> will continue to welcome visitors to Theater Square, where craft demonstrations, educational activities, and meetings with tradition keepers will take place throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>In the Art Courtyard<\/b><\/strong> the intangible cultural heritage traditions of Lithuania and Latvia will be presented. Visitors will be able to learn about the tradition of drinking coffee in Lithuania Minor, hear the musical traditions of the St. Petersburg accordion and the Latgalian \u201cbubyns\u201d drums, the singing traditions of the Samogitians and the southern (\u0160ilini\u0173) Dz\u016bkai, the sound of the century-old Skriaud\u017eiai zithers, and the folk dance traditions of Riga. <\/p>\n<p>In the evening, an impressive international program awaits the audience on the main stage in Teatro Square\u2014a performance by the legendary Sicilian puppet theater <strong><b>\u201cOpera dei Pupi\u201d<\/b><\/strong> , Georgian polyphonic singing, Argentine tango, and Paraguayan guaran\u00ed music. The festival day will culminate with traditional open-air night dances. <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong><b>July 12 \u2013 a puppet show and a farewell until the next LAUKSN\u0172 <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This Sunday will be another opportunity to see the Sicilian puppet theater performance <strong><b>&#8220;Orlando&#8217;s Madness&#8221;<\/b><\/strong>, and the festival will conclude with a cozy get-together  <strong><b>&#8220;Over a cup of coffee. See you at the next &#8216;Lauksnai'&#8221; <\/b><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong><b> <\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><b>Not just concerts<\/b><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Traditional Crafts Village will be open throughout the festival <strong><b>Traditional Crafts Village<\/b><\/strong>, where visitors can watch artisans at work and try their hand at various crafts; the Art Courtyard will host international exhibitions; and those wishing to learn more about seaside traditions can take part in the tour <strong><b>\u201cSecrets of Amber Hunting\u201d<\/b><\/strong>. During the festival, the \u201cRaudon\u0173 plyt\u0173 takas\u201d caf\u00e9 will invite you to <strong><b>you to sample dishes inspired by the culinary heritage<\/b><\/strong> . <\/p>\n<p><strong><b>All festival events are free.
