The exhibition features surfaces, shapes and fragments of everyday, but almost unnoticeable objects. The process of decomposition is presented here as aesthetic and decorative, a peaceful state of wear and tear, which the author describes as a return to nature. “Fragment is about the beauty created by environment and time.

The fragment in Valerijus Pulokas’s photographs is not a surface found by chance. It is an image that has been observed for a long time, identified and extracted from its environment, where the author is not interested in the function of the object, but in its condition – a material exposed to time, humidity, salts, dirt and light. The surfaces photographed have already lost their original clarity: metal rusts, paint layers, glass becomes almost opaque. However, it is in this stage of decay that the author discovers beauty.

Pulock’s relationship with his subject is based on attentiveness rather than documentation. He does not present an overall image – a recognisable object or the context of the environment. The author deliberately approaches the detail to the point of eliminating everything that could “explain” the fragment left behind. In this way, the surfaces lose the signs of a specific location or purpose and begin to function as independent structures. Selection is crucial here: the artist chooses not significant objects, but those in which decay has already created decorative layers, textures and colour relationships.

Light plays an important role in these photographs. It not only brings out the relief of surfaces, but also constantly changes the state of objects – turning gloss into matt, bringing dirt or rust closer to painterly planes. The light in Pulock’s works is not dramatic or showy, but rather surprising in its precision and its ability to subtly distinguish the density of materials.

Colour relationships are equally important. The bright orange of rust, the blue of oxidation, the grey of chipped paint or the faded green of the photographs create intense compositions. Colour does not appear here as a means of aestheticization, but as a consequence of decay. As a result, the images are balanced between the photographic and the abstract painterly surface.

In the exhibition Fragments, Pulokas consistently works with endangered objects and their transformations. Photography becomes a way for him to stop the brief moment when an object is no longer fully recognisable, but not yet gone.

Capturing the traces left by time has always been one of the author’s main themes. Only, unlike before, in the current phase of his work, he steps back from man and photographs the traces he has left behind – objects that are already on their way back to nature.

The exhibition will run until 15 August.

_____________________________

Please note that photography and filming may take place during the event.
