11 March commemoration at Klaipėda University

2025-03-10 - 2025-03-10

Time

15:00

Location

Klaipėda University
H. Manto g. 84

10 March at 15.00. An event dedicated to the Lithuanian Independence Restoration Day will be held at the Stasys Vaitekūnas Auditorium of Klaipėda University (Herkaus Mantas g. 84). During the commemoration, the audience will have the opportunity to meet the first chairman of the Klaipėda City Council and honorary citizen of Klaipėda Vytautas Čepas, Honorary Doctor of the University of Klaipėda, as well as to see the documentary film “The Saga of the Warship”, produced by the students of journalism at the Klaipėda University.

The film will be presented by its director and journalist Asta Dykovienė. The film tells the story of Klaipėda at the dawn of independence, when the city, which was then home to about 40% Russian speakers, was faced with the question – will it become another bleeding wound like the Donbass?

The young filmmakers stress that the film does not claim to be a patriotic epic, but it should be of particular interest to the inhabitants of Klaipėda and its surroundings, who might recognise themselves among the participants of the event captured in the historical footage. The film uses the valuable archive of the chronicler of the Revival period, the now deceased Klaipėda resident Romas Pletkauskas.

We invite everyone to participate in the event, to honour Lithuanian Independence Day and to remember the history of Klaipėda.
