For the ballet, set to original music for orchestra by Lithuanian composer Antanas Jasenka, Slovenian choreographer Gajus Žmavc drew inspiration from surviving legends and historical testimonies about Hercules Manta, a Prussian tribal warrior and one of the most famous leaders of the Great Prussian Revolt against the Teutonic Knights of the XIII century. However, instead of retelling the story of Herkus Mantas in a distinctive dance language, the choreographer chooses the form of a non-narrative ballet and creates an emotional landscape of a fictitious world using universal symbols and a minimalist stage design. The historical narrative is purified to an abstract symbolism-based, stylised physical expression, while the direction focuses on the clash of light, hope and love against darkness, despair and loss.
