Welcome to the second meeting of the English Book Club.
This time we will read Ray Bradbury’s 451° Fahrenheit, a worldwide bestseller and classic dystopian novel.
Bradbury’s philosophical anti-utopia paints a dark picture of a post-industrial society: a future world in which special fire brigades mercilessly burn everything without exception. The possession of books is forbidden and prosecuted by law, and interactive television becomes a means of massively fooling the public. The rare dissenter is brutally punished, and the Mechanical Dog is used to hunt down incorrigible dissidents. One of his victims is Guy Montague, a former “fireman”.
Montague’s epiphany, which has remained relevant for more than 70 years, warns us of what might happen to a high-tech society that has abandoned the tradition of independent thinking, which is symbolised by books in the novel.
The book is available at the Klaipėda County Ievos Simonaitytė Public Library.
The meeting will be held in English.
The club is moderated by Celeste Ganderson.
We look forward to welcoming all those who would like to spend an interesting and informative evening and participate in the discussion in English.
