Yaroslava Pulinovich (born in 1987) is a young Russian playwright who has already won various literary prizes (Voice of a Generation, Debut, Eurasia, Golden Mask and others). She has her own style, and her plays are written as if by a single inspiration – honest and passionate. “Pulinović is a playwright of vital force, of life force, which she discovers every time in her characters. It is essentially the desire for a full life that makes them heroes”, says Russian theatre critic Pavel Rudnev. Plays based on the playwright’s plays have been staged in England, the USA, Poland, Estonia, Ukraine and many theatres in Russia.
“Else’s Land” is a true story told to the author by her grandmother. All the characters in the play have their prototypes. It is a moving story about people’s lives and relationships in a small Siberian village. The heroine of the play, Else, is a Russian German who has had a difficult life during the war and post-war years, but falls in love for the first time at the age of 76. Her chosen one, Vasily, is a bright man, a geography teacher who has spent half his life telling his pupils about the seas and mountains, but has never seen them himself. Now they have each other and dream of travelling the world together, but things don’t go so smoothly… This is the story of Romeo and Juliet in their seventies, a story that may seem unbelievable but is real.
