On August 20, 2026, at the Art Department Gallery of the Immanuel Kant Public Library of the Klaipėda City Municipality A retrospective exhibition by architect Zigmas Bernardas Rutkauskas, titled “ARCHITECTURE CANNOT EXIST WITHOUT ART,” will open at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition organizers invite the public to get an up-close look at the architect’s legacy, which has shaped the face of the port city.

For many residents of Klaipėda, the name Z. B. Rutkauskas has become synonymous with the port city’s architectural identity, cozy interiors, and vibrant public spaces. In his work, the architect always sought a deep, organic connection between the tectonics of a building and fine art. In his philosophy, architecture could not exist in isolation from the fine arts; therefore, tapestries, monumental frescoes, sgraffito, stained-glass windows, and sculptural compositions became an integral part of the language of the interiors he created.

At the exhibition, visitors will see not only rational architectural and interior design projects, but also the artist’s more sensitive side. The exhibition will feature the architect’s watercolors—a subtle, sensitive genre that captivated him during his student years and to which he has remained faithful throughout his life.
