The Exchange Bridge was named after the adjacent stock exchange. By the 18th century the bridge was wooden. A small opening in the middle of the bridge was opened to allow the masts of sailing boats to pass through. Passing ships had to pay taxes. In 1879 a new metal swing bridge on brick piers was built.
The bridge was destroyed during World War II. Rebuilt in 1948 and reconstructed in 2007.
