The Meridianas Sailing Ship – a Symbol of the City

I-VII 24/7 (outside)

4.5

At the Biržos Bridge, where the Old Town lines are reflected in the water of the Danė River, the Meridianas sailing ship stands proudly. This sailing ship was built at the Turku shipyard in Finland in 1948 as a contribution to the Soviet Union after World War II. Later, the ship went to the Klaipėda Maritime School and became a sailing ship for training.

For many post-war sailors the ship was a place to get the first baptism of fire, and careers of many prominent captains of the port city, such as Vilius Pakalniškis, Zenonas Kaupas and Ričardas Lučka, started on it. At one time there were 48 such sailing ships, however, only a few have survived to this day. One of them today adorns the port of Tallinn.

The Meridianas of Klaipėda completed its training mission in 1967 and, upon returning to the city, operated as a restaurant on the Danė River, becoming a legendary place for meetings and unforgettable evenings.

In 2012, the ship was purchased by Aidas Kaveckas and Aloyzas Kuzmarskis. After the restoration carried out on the initiative of ship’s owners, the city relic returned to its usual place in 2013. The revived Meridian is an integral part of the identity of the port city, a living symbol of memory and a witness to dreams about the sea, inviting one to stop, admire and feel the spirit of Klaipėda.
