It is a unique object of technical heritage and a historical treasure. The hand-turned metal bridge over the castle canal was built in 1855. It is the only one of its kind in Lithuania. It is made of riveted iron and decorated with chains, and was therefore known as the “Chain Bridge” (German: Kettenbrücke) until World War II. The bridge is manually operated. Two people turn the bridge so that the ditch underneath the bridge can be used to enter the former moat of Klaipėda Castle. The property has been designated as a maritime heritage site. The label is used to mark maritime heritage sites such as buildings and sites of former buildings, quays, paths, ships, etc.
