If you’re longing for some music, come to a free concert by accordionist Povilas Neliupšis at the Pranas Domšaitis Gallery of the Lithuanian National Museum of Art (33 Liepų St., Klaipėda). The concert will take place on Sunday, August 2, at 2:00 p.m.
Povilas Neliupšis (born 2002) began his musical journey at the age of just three at the Kėdainiai Music School. Povilas is currently studying in Austria at the University of the Arts in Graz (in Prof. Janne Rättyä’s class), where he is the first Lithuanian in the university’s history to pursue a master’s degree in accordion performance.
In 2018, the 16-year-old accordionist was honored by Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of the Republic of Lithuania, for his active concert career. In addition to his success in competitions held in Lithuania and the Baltic states, the accordionist has represented Lithuania in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Switzerland, Italy, the Czech Republic, Austria, and China. Following his successful performances in these competitions, the artist embarked on an international concert tour, performing in Gdańsk, Riga, Rome, Oslo, and Graz.
During his studies, Povilas hones his knowledge and technical skills in master classes with the world’s most renowned accordionists: Elsbeth Moser (Switzerland), Mie Miki (Japan), Massimiliano Pitocco (Italy), Veli Kujala (Finland), Iñaki Alberdi (Spain), and Geir Draugsvoll (Denmark). According to music experts, Povilas’s concerts are distinguished by an exceptionally unique selection of musical works—the performer showcases his musical knowledge through impressive transcriptions of Baroque-era pieces, while his virtuosity and lyrical nature shine through as he performs and promotes the music of Lithuanian composers. The accordionist performs not only in solo programs but also as part of various chamber ensembles: Trio Primavera and the Vilnius City Ensemble NIKO (artistic director and conductor—Gediminas Gelgotas).
In 2026, Povilas became a fellow of the Lithuanian Council for Culture, thereby earning a place among the elite of Lithuanian academic music. In addition to his active concert career, Povilas Neliupšis serves as an ambassador for the project “Lithuanian Capital of Culture—Kėdainiai 2026.”
The concert will feature music from the 20th and 21st centuries: works for solo accordion by Luciano Berio, Toshio Hosokawa, Paavo Korpijaakko, Vykinto Baltako, Laura Zarembaitė, and other composers.
