12 January 2026 A run will be held in Klaipėda to commemorate the Defenders of Freedom Day – January 13th. This is an annual tradition that brings together the city’s community and visitors to pay tribute to those who died and fought for Lithuania’s freedom.
The Run for the Defenders of Freedom, which will take place in Klaipėda for the 25th time this year, brings together hundreds of people every year. According to the organisers, the aim of the event is not only to commemorate historical events, but also to foster the idea of freedom in the modern city community.
One of the most important objectives of the Run is to promote love for the Homeland and to foster civic responsibility for its freedom and independence. This is the symbolic message that participants take to the streets of the city as they cover the chosen distance. In this way, the run becomes not only a sign of remembrance and respect, but also a symbol of citizenship, solidarity and freedom that unites everyone.
The run will take place on Monday 12 January 2026, starting at 8pm.
There are two distances to choose from:
8 km (main distance)
- Start at 20:00 from Giruliai TV Tower (Vasarotojų g. 2B, Giruliai, Klaipėda)
- The route will follow the cycle path, passing the Klaipėda Summer Stage, Liepojos St. and H. Manto St., finishing in front of Klaipėda City Hall (Liepų St. 11).
3 km (short distance)
- Start at 20:20 at the Klaipėda Summer Stage (Liepojos g. 1, Klaipėda)
- For schoolchildren, seniors and anyone who finds the long course too difficult.

Information for participants
Participants can arrive at the starting point on their own or wait for special buses at 18:30 at Klaipėda City Hall (Liepų g. 11, Klaipėda). Departure to Giruliai – 19:00.
The time limit for completing the course is 1 hour. 20 min.
Participants compete in men’s and women’s groups.
Starting numbers with timing sensors shall be issued in advance or at the starting points at the times specified in the regulations.
There is no age limit, but minors must be accompanied by a parent or coach.
Awards
The first 900 finishers will receive commemorative medals.
Cups and commemorative gifts for 1st-6th place in the men’s and women’s groups in the 8 km race.
Trophies and commemorative gifts for the men’s and women’s 3km groups.
There will also be prizes for the youngest and oldest runner.
