Can culture reach the places where people live? The Immanuel Kant Public Library of the Klaipėda City Municipality says yes. From July 28 to August 7, on the grounds of St. Joseph the Worker Church (27 Smiltelės St.), an Interactive Summer Reading Room will be set up, inviting residents and visitors of the southern part of the city to free events, creative activities, gatherings, concerts, and discussions.
This initiative is now in its second year of creating a vibrant cultural space. The library aims to make culture easily accessible to everyone—regardless of age or interests. That’s why the ten-day program features activities for children, young people, families, seniors, and anyone else who wants to spend their summer afternoons in a meaningful way.
Throughout the program, a summer reading room will be open, where participants can take part in the “Read Your Way Through Klaipėda” Reading Challenge, read books, play traditional outdoor and board games, draw, or simply socialize in a cozy setting.
One of the program’s highlights is events that invite visitors not only to watch, but also to participate. Visitors can look forward to interactive science experiments, a virtual reality film about the history of Klaipėda, an orienteering game, creative education activities, meetings with writers, wellness activities, poetry and music evenings, and traditional cultural afternoons. Special attention is given to families. Children can look forward to educational activities, entertainers, creative workshops, robot arm building, storytime, games, and—on the final day of the event—a summer festival featuring a foam cannon.
The highlight of the program will be a discussion about southern Klaipėda. During the discussion “People Shape a Place: Everyday Life, Spirit, and History of Southern Klaipėda,” historians and representatives of the cultural and community sectors will discuss the identity of this neighborhood, its history, contemporary life, and vision for the future. The organizers hope that this event will encourage more frequent discussions about the southern part of the city—not only as a residential area, but also as a vibrant cultural and community space.
Community spirit also plays an important role in the program. Community Day, taking place on August 4, will bring together police officers, firefighters, Lithuanian Red Cross volunteers, K-9 handlers, and the team from the Klaipėda Culture and Communication Center. Visitors will not only be able to learn more about safety but also participate in graffiti, breakdancing, parkour, creative activities, and street culture events.
Music lovers can look forward to a performance by the senior dance group “Klaipėdos Zunda,” an evening of folk music and dance, a literary-musical composition dedicated to Klaipėda’s anniversary, and the summer reading room season will conclude with a meditative journey featuring gongs and breathing exercises.
The Interactive Summer Reading Room program invites you to stop by, meet others, and rediscover your city. Here, culture becomes not just an event, but a part of everyday life—one that brings people of different generations together, encourages you to get to know your neighbors, share stories, and build a vibrant urban community.

The interactive summer reading room is open Tuesday through Saturday from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
In the event of inclement weather, the events will take place at the St. Joseph the Worker Parish community center.

Enjoy lively traditional games, fun circle dances, and a folk dance/game lesson, all accompanied by the sounds of live accordion and drum music. The band from the Slengiai School and Multifunctional Center’s Ethnomusicology Studio (led by Jonas Kavaliauskas) will be performing.

Participants: Viktoras Ačas, pastor of St. Joseph the Worker Church; Assoc. 2:00–5:00 p.m. Klaipėda Culture and Communication Center’s street culture afternoon, “Our Courtyard Won’t Be Silent!” Enjoy a graffiti workshop with street artist and illustrator Pju Čeikauskas (Pidžinas), breakdancing performances, DJ music, parkour, T-shirt and tote bag printing workshops, and badge and sticker making. Participants can also look forward to contests, prizes, refreshments, and other fun activities.
