On 30-31 May, for two days, Klaipėda’s skies will be decorated with colourful kites of all sizes. The 4th International Beach Kite Festival “Winds of the Winds”, funded by the Klaipėda City Municipality, will take place on the central beach at Melnrage, near the café “Klaipėdos kupolas”. The festival, dedicated to maritime culture, will offer not only an unforgettable spectacle, but also a day filled with various activities, education and meetings.
On the last weekend of May, the sky of Klaipėda will be decorated with kites flown by Lithuanian and foreign enthusiasts using one of the most important symbols of Klaipėda – wind. Not only acrobatic kites, but also figure kites will be catching the gusts of wind, which every year, in favourable weather conditions, become the highlight of the festival. In order to promote community spirit and maritime traditions, almost a thousand kites and wind turbines symbolizing green energy will be “born” in the kite workshop, which will be provided by Ignitis Renewables, an international company and a leader in green energy in the Baltic States.
Fourth International Festival
The kite festival “Winds of the Winds”, now in its fourth year, attracts more and more kite enthusiasts from foreign countries every year. This is the realisation of the original idea of making the festival international. Last year, the festival was graced by a guest from Poland, Witek Klimkowscy, a kite enthusiast specialising in aerobatic kites. All of his kites are unique and made with his own hands. This year, kite enthusiasts will be joined by guests from Germany, Poland, Estonia and Finland.
The kites will take off at noon on 30 May at 12.00 and on 31 May at 13.00.
Turn the wind “Ignitis renewables
For the second year, the main partner of the Klaipėda International Kite Festival is Ignitis renewables. The international green energy company consistently continues its sustainable and close cooperation with communities and presents renewable energy projects.
At the colourful Winds of the Winds festival, Ignitis Renewables representatives will lead a special education session together with the event community to introduce children to offshore wind farms through games and hands-on learning. Children will have the opportunity to learn about the working principles, construction processes and benefits of wind farms. The educational programme will include hands-on activities where children will build model wind turbines, observe how they work and learn about wind power generation. The educational activities will take place on 30 May.
Colourful workshops
The annual kite workshop, which attracts a large number of guests, will start on Saturday, 30 May at 10.00 am. Traditionally, festival guests will be invited to make their own kite, decorate it in a nautical way and soon try it out in the sky. At least 800 kites are expected to be made by 3 pm. The kite workshop will take place inside the café Kupolas Klaipėda, a loyal partner of the festival.
There will also be plenty of music on the central beach – on 30 May from 15.00 to 17.00, DJ Mamania will be dancing not only the kites, but also all the participants of the festival.

On 30 and 31 May, from 13:00, a 52 square metre kite-flag will fly in the sky, dedicated to the Year of Social Responsibility in Klaipėda.
