La Cantiga de la Serena from Italy opens up a musical map of ancient Mediterranean cultures – the path along which people, languages, legends and songs have moved for centuries. Combining instruments from different traditions and improvisational freedom, this ensemble creates a sound that is contemporary yet deeply rooted in history.

The programme combines melodies from the regions of Puglia, Salento and Calabria, tarantellas and pizzicatos filled with the rhythm of dance, and Sephardic cantigas (songs) of extraordinary gentleness, preserving the cultural heritage of the Jewish diaspora in Spain. This is music that features the monotonous lapping of the waves, the dancing in the town squares, the sadness of women’s songs and the longing of travellers, all told by flutist and harpist Giorgio Santoro, vocalist and multi-instrumentalist Fabrizio Piepoli, and guitar maestro Adolfo La Volpe.
