Wooden Masks for Midsummer by Stanislovas Meškauskas The exhibition presents 70 wooden Midsummer masks created over more than five decades. The oldest mask in the exhibition is 53 years old, carved from aspen when the author was only 14 years old. Some of the first works have already found a home – three masks are kept in the Platelių Užgavėni Museum.
The bulk of the exhibition consists of traditional masks for Midsummer. The exposition reveals a whole host of characters of the Midsummer masks: the dropsicles, devils, witches, beggars, animal masks, and guillas. Alongside them, viewers will also see newfangled and original interpretations that push the boundaries of tradition.
Each mask has its own character, mood and story. Author Stanislovas Meškauskas calls them his “children” – all of them are beloved and precious. The creator himself says: “There are a few that I don’t like very much, but I can’t push them away.”
