The photography exhibition “Red Bricks of Klaipėda Region” is about the red brick buildings and houses of the Klaipėda Region, which are one of the most distinctive features of the Klaipėda Region. The idea of the exhibition and the project “Red Bricks” is to tell the story of the Klaipėda region through the red brick buildings and their fates.
Professor Alfredas Bumblauskas said in an interview: “The red bricks of the Klaipėda region are a sign of Western civilisation and, at the same time, a sign of Lithuanian cultural identity that is not fully understood… Protect every red brick, because after the occupation of Lithuania Minor and the Königsberg region in 1945, the Soviets did not hesitate to name their main goal: the expulsion of the Prussian spirit from this region, not only by destroying the local people, traditions, but also the architectural heritage…”
During the event, Prof. Dr. Vasilijus Safronovas, the most famous historian of Klaipėda region, the Director of the Institute of Baltic Region History and Archaeology of KU, will speak about the significance of the red bricks of Klaipėda region and the architectural uniqueness of this region.
The exhibition photographers Vaida Šetkauskė and Gediminas Sass will share their impressions and the knowledge they have gained from photographing red brick objects. In addition to them, the exhibition has been realised by four other talented photographers: Matas Baranauskas, Vidūnas Kulikauskis, Andrius Pelakauskas, Donatas Vaičiulis.
The photo exhibition “Red Bricks of Klaipėda Region” features old red brick schools, post offices, Evangelical Lutheran churches and their buildings, train stations.
The project “Red Bricks” talks about the history of the Klaipėda region in the 19th and 20th centuries: schools and the education system, train connections and full railway stations, post offices, people in the towns and villages of the Klaipėda region, their leisure time, their lifestyle, their clothes, about the Lutheran faith and traditions in this church.
