HYSTORY | GRAGIC

Since the early feminist movements, life trajectories, deviations from and transgressions of norms, experiences and events that have been imprinted on women’s bodies and consciousness have become a painful but vital material for both life and art.

A significant contribution to the field of contemporary dance, Patrizia Apergi’s latest work focuses on the struggles experienced by women throughout the ages. A continuation of Planites (2012), Aerites Dance Company’s previous work, in which a company of men explored the street as a space of wandering and a search for a better tomorrow, Hystory unfolds through a feminine lens.

The meaning of the performance comes from the intersection of the terms “hystera” and “history” in the title itself.
In ancient Greek, “hystera” means “womb”, the origin of “hysteria”, which has long been archetypally associated with the female sex. The once widespread theory of the “wandering uterus” suggested that the uterus could move around in the body, causing physical and psychological disorders. This theory reinforced the historical belief that women are inherently prone to emotional instability.
