The Klaipėda Center for Cultural Communication (KKKC), led by Liuda Liaudanskaitė—a well-known watercolorist in western Lithuania—organizes “Seniors’ Thursdays” for seniors with (or without) an artistic bent. On the last Thursday of every month, active seniors set out to experience culture at Klaipėda’s art institutions and beyond.
Exhibitions, events, educational activities, meetings with famous people, trips to neighboring cities, socializing in cafes, and genuine human connections—all of this takes place on Seniors’ Thursdays in Klaipėda.
Watercolor artist Liuda Laudanskaitė, who launched this initiative, says that when she retired, she thought she would enjoy complete freedom and boundless amounts of time, but once that happened, she found herself missing her commitment to others—and, above all, social interaction. Eventually, at the urging of her friends, she joined the KKKC administration and began bringing seniors together for shared cultural activities.
“We’ve been diving into Klaipėda’s cultural scene nonstop since the fall of 2023. After all, exhibitions don’t take a break!” says Liuda.
According to our interviewee, the exhibitions often turn into educational sessions and, frequently, into conversations in cafés. “Some people dropped out, but the core group has remained at about 10 people. We’ve all become close; we know a lot about each other, and we bring our friends along.”
Most of the participants are women, but there are also seniors who come with their partners or on their own. People come from all walks of life: not only artists, but also a pharmacist, an accountant, a sailor’s wife who took up painting after retiring, and a poet’s widow. The seniors share recommendations on movies, theater, and literature; they exchange plants; and they celebrate name days—and so traditions are born.
There will be no summer break, and senior citizens will continue to meet on the last Thursday of every month at the KKKC Exhibition Hall from around 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. (the time is agreed upon each time by mutual consent).
