The global fascination with films, which clearly includes social viewing experiences and encounters with film beyond the confines of the cinema, establishes film as ritual as a highly extended and culturally diffuse phenomenon. The concept of cinema as a ritual suggests that you see and accept that films act as a door to the awareness of the audience, affect their actions and their view of the world โ essentially transforming them in one way or another. Cleansing the cinema from the lobby filled with descriptive posters and promotional displays, branded refreshments, and the ticket tearing usher to the advertisements and trailers noise, we invite you to the “Suspaustas laikas” program to study the “ritual” not around the cinema but in it by experiment
22:00 Ecopoetics I: Begin by Observing with Your Fingers – Dialogues
This program is curated by Vilnius-based cine-artist Miklรณs (Miki) Ambrรณzy. Using cinema as a form of conversation, this program suggests the possibility that humans are not the center of life, nor fully conscious of the systems they claim to rule over. While we believe language sets us apart from other life forms and that our consciousness allows us to alter our environment, the program shows that the environment shapes us just as much, if not more
The films in this program are arranged as couplets – a pair of successive lines of verse, typically rhyming and of the same length. Each film asks questions that the one after answers or complicates further. The filmmakers’ projects begin to move away from representation and imitation, towards increasing complexity through layering and the parameters of cinema. Staging, direct interventions on film, multiple exposures, optical or contact printing are all deployed as familiar rituals of the genre.
The question to ask ourselves at the end of all this is: now has this program of ecopoetic experimental cinema offered us an alternative way of looking and being in the world?
