“In The History of Fat, glycerine becomes both a preserving and a dissolving force – a substance that preserves memory while silently contradicting it. This paradox can be seen in the exhibits of Ana de Almeida and Leo Trotsenko’s “The Unbearable Gravity of Importance” at the KCCC Exhibition Hall. This is where the idea of this workshop begins.
Participants are invited to create their own conceptual soaps using pigments, fragrances and a vegan glycerine base as a medium. Like the handmade soaps in the installation, each object created in this workshop will act as a small archive – a gesture of preservation that is inherently temporary.
To participate, participants are asked to bring small memory objects, photocopies and fragments of photographs (the size of the material should be 7.5 × 5 × 2 cm). They will be dropped in soap, suspended in a slide, held and slowly disassembled in the same material that gives them their shape.
The workshop asks: what do we choose to preserve and what does this choice say about how we create meaning? What is lost in archiving and what remains? Previous artistic experience is not required – just something valuable to keep and a willingness to let the material decide what happens next.
Ana de Almeida (born 1987) is an artist and author based in Lisbon and Vienna. Her work explores the politics of memory, the intersection between archival methodologies and personal and collective histories.
The workshop will be held in English.
