Although Klaipėda University is the youngest university in Lithuania, the main complex of its buildings dates back to much older times when, in 1904-1907, barracks for military were built: six neo-Gothic-style buildings made of red clinker bricks, with a chapel, dining rooms and armoury. For almost half a century the building served the army, today they serve science.
The university was founded on 1 January 1991, by merging the departments of the Kaunas Institute and the Šiauliai Pedagogical Institute. Currently, it is home to three faculties, several institutes, a library, a publishing house, a Botanical Garden and a Career Centre. The university located by the sea is a lively scientific port, where history and education merge into one space.
The place, where discipline and uniformed daily life used to prevail, today, enjoys a completely different rhythm, i.e. knowledge is spread, ideas are born, and visions of the future incubate here.
