The sculpture Twelve Brothers depicts a Lithuanian folktale about a sister and her twelve brothers, who were turned into ravens by a wicked witch.
We witness the moment when, through the sister’s self-sacrifice, the brothers begin to transform back into men. Two of the hands belong to the sister, while the third is that of the youngest brother. Soon, the other brothers’ hands will emerge to embrace their sister, and the witch’s curse will end forever.
Sculptor Dalia Matulaitė sought to convey the extraordinary patience of a woman, through which love manifests in the world.
This sculpture is a tribute to the power of female devotion and sacrifice.
